Oct. 17, 2012
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Charlotte’ Braeden Cryderman and Temple’s Brandon Matthews were selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Golf Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Wednesday. Cryderman and Matthews were recognized for tournaments played during the week of Oct. 10-16.
Cryderman, playing in his first action of the 2012 fall season, posted career-best rounds and tournament scores, finishing in a tie for third overall at the Rod Myers Invitational, hosted by Duke University over the weekend. The Canadian import led all players with 12 birdies through the first two rounds, and tied for the most total birdies for the weekend with 15. With a 1-over par 73 in Sunday’s final round, he landed at four-under for the tournament, and was one of just 12 players in the tournament field to post a sub-par round twice in the weekend. He was tied for the second-lowest score on par-four holes (-1) and was tied for fourth on par three holes (also at -1). His top-five finish was the second for a Charlotte golfer in a tournament this season. The 49ers finished third overall, the third tournament in a row finishing fourth or higher.
Matthews claimed his second tournament title of the fall with a one-stroke victory at the 19-team Philadelphia Big 5 Invitational in Huntingdon Valley, Pa. The Pittston Area, native fired the tournament’s lone sub-par round, a one-under 69, over the final 18 holes of competition to finish 5-over par (145) at the 6,670-yard Philmont Country Club. Matthews hit a 15-foot putt on 18th hole to save par and secure the win.
