NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Dayton, the three-time defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion, will be the top seed for the A-10 Volleyball Championship, which begins Friday at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Duquesne University’s campus.

There is no charge for admission to the three-day, single-elimination tournament to support those located in the northeast impacted by Hurricane Sandy. In addition, the quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be streamed live on and the championship final will air on national television on CBS Sports Network (channel finder link).

The 12th-ranked Flyers posted a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play to secure the top seed and went 23-4 overall and have been nationally ranked all season. Led by seniors Rachel Krabacher and Samantha Selsky, Dayton earned a bye into the semifinals as the top seed.

Xavier will be the No. 2 seed and claims the second bye into the semifinals. The Musketeers are 11-3 in league play and 19-10 overall, with two of the A-10 losses coming against top-seeded Dayton. Led by a class of five seniors, including 2011 Libero of the Year Stephanie Vorherr, XU is looking for its first title since 2001.

League newcomers VCU and Butler will meet in the first quarterfinal match. VCU, with a 24-5 overall record, began the year strong and lost just one non-conference match all year. VCU finished the A-10 regular season at 10-4 to claim the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Butler at 4:30 pm on Friday, Nov. 16. Butler was 7-7 in Atlantic 10 play, tying George Washington for the final spot in the six-team championship. The Bulldogs won the regular-season meeting with GW to win the tiebreaker and earn the final championship bid. BU finished the regular season at 17-11 overall.

Championship host Duquesne will be the No. 4 seed and will face fifth-seeded Temple on Friday at 7:00 pm in the second quarterfinal match. The Dukes were 9-5 in conference play and 22-10 overall. Temple finished 8-6 against A-10 opponents and 18-10 overall to claim the fifth seed outright and secure its first championship appearance since 2009. Both Temple and Duquesne led the league at different points this season.

Xavier will play the winner of the VCU-Butler quarterfinal at 6:00 pm on Sat., Nov. 17 in the second semifinal. Dayton faces the Duquesne-Temple winner in the first semifinal at 3:30 pm Saturday.
