PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Top-seeded Dayton defeated No. 5 Temple 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-14) Saturday in the 2012 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship Semifinals at Duquesne University’s Palumbo Center to advance to the A-10 title match. It will mark the 10th consecutive finals appearance for the 12th-ranked Flyers.
UD will face the winner between No. 2 Xavier and No. 3 VCU in Sunday’s match, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network at Noon.
The Flyers (24-4) used a strong offensive attack to beat Temple, hitting over .330 as a team in every set. A-10 Player of the Year Rachel Krabacher recorded 18 kills, hitting .341 to lead UD. She was the only Flyer with double-digit kills. The remaining 29 kills were scattered among five other players.
Temple battled in set one, getting five kills from Gabrielle Matautia, who led the Owls with 15 total kills for the match. Elyse Burkert, who had 11 total kills in the match, had four in set one to help TU keep pace for most of the match. Matautia had six kills and hit .417 in set two, but she was the only Temple player to register a positive hitting percentage in that set.
Defensively, Temple got 11 digs from A-10 Libero of the Year Chelsea Tupuola while Dayton had three players with double-digit digs, led by freshman Janna Krafka’s 16. Isolde Hannan turned back TU attacks at the net, recording 10 blocks.
Temple closed out its season at 19-11 and finished fifth in the league standings, well above the preseason pick of 11th.
