NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Seven Atlantic 10 teams have been honored by the America Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for their excellence in the classroom. Duquesne, George Washington, Rhode Island, Saint Louis, Butler, Charlotte and Temple were all recognized Wednesday for the 2012-13 academic year. In addition, George Mason, which joined the A-10 on July 1, 2013, was also recognized.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. The AVCA had a record 623 teams have earn the Team Academic Award for the 2012-2013 season. This number once broke the previous year's total of 536 and sets a new all-time high for this award. NCAA Division I recorded their highest-ever total number of recipients, honoring 130 programs, including the A-10 schools.
The 2013 Atlantic 10 volleyball season begins August 30 with numerous early-season tournaments. The 2013 A-10 Championship will be played at George Washington’s Charles E. Smith Center Nov. 22-24.
