Kriskova, Self and Rygelski Earn Weekly Volleyball Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—VCU sophomore Romana Kriskova and Rhode Island freshman Layne Self were named the Atlantic 10’s Volleyball Player and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. The league announced the awards Monday along with tabbing Saint Louis freshman Danielle Rygelski the Rookie of the Week for matches played from Sept. 30 – Oct. 6.

Kriskova, an outside hitter, averaged 5.60 kills per set as Rams went 3-0 and maintained their hold on first place in the A-10. She blasted 22 kills and hit .356 in a 3-1 win over four-time defending league champion Dayton. The Bratislava, Slovakia, native also had 15 digs in that match to post a double-double. She also had 16 kills and hit .308 against George Washington and tallied 18 kills while hitting .433 in a three-set won over in-state foe Hampton.

Self, a native of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., recorded 15 blocks and three digs to go along with 32 kills and three aces for the week. The middle blocker, who averaged 1.07 blocks per set, had six blocks in a win over Brown and against Duquesne. She added three more blocks against George Washington, including two solos. She also had a .455 hitting percentage. Currently leads the team with 71 and is the conference’s top-ranking freshman in the category.

Rygelski recorded a team-best 28 kills this weekend, including 18 at George Mason. The outside hitter from St. Charles, Mo., also recorded her seventh double-double of the season against the Patriots with 18 kills and 12 digs. Rygelski also was an efficient attacker, notching a .273 attack percentage.
