NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Duquesne, Saint Louis and VCU claimed the top Atlantic 10 volleyball end-of-season awards, which were announced Thursday ahead of the 2013 A-10 Volleyball Championship, which begins Friday at George Washington University.

VCU sophomore outside hitter Romana Kriskova was named the league’s Player of the Year and her teammate, junior libero Amanda Love, was selected as the A-10’s Libero of the Year. Duquesne sophomore setter Mary Henry garnered Setter of the Year honors while her coach Steve Opperman was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. Freshman Danielle Rygelski, an outside hitter from Saint Louis earned Rookie of the Year honors.

The league also announced the All-Conference, All-Rookie and All-Academic teams. The top awards, All-Conference and All-Rookie were selected by a vote of the A-10 nine head coaches. The All-Academic team was selected by a vote from the A-10’s volleyball media relations directors.

Kriskova, a native of Bratislava, Slovakia, broke the VCU school record for single season kills and currently has 577 (4.89 per set), 151 more kills than the next closest player in the A-10. She ranks fourth nationally in kills per set and fourth in points per set (5.67). Kriskova also leads the league in service aces with 49. Kriskova was named to the All-Rookie Team last season.

Love led VCU and ranked first in the Atlantic 10 in total digs with 429. A native of Southfield, Mich., she ranked seventh in the league in digs per set, averaging 3.64. She had six matches with 20+ digs, including a season-high 27 digs against Tennessee.

Henry was second in the A-10 in assists per set (10.16) and third in total assists with 1,016. She had 14 matches of 40+ assists, including four matches where she broke 50 assists. Hailing from Broomfield Hills, Mich., Henry was an All-Rookie selection last year.

Rygelski, from St. Charles, Mo., ranked third in the A-10 in kills (403) and kills per set (3.77). She was 63rd nationally in kills per set and 69th in points per set (4.28).

Opperman wins his fourth Coach of the Year award, having also won in 2001, 2004 and 2010, however this marks the first year he was not named Co-Coach of the Year. He led the Dukes to a 12-2 conference record and the No. 1 seed for the A-10 Championship. Duquesne is 18-9 overall.

The 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship begins Friday at GW’s Charles E. Smith Center two quarterfinal matches at 5:00 pm (No. 4 Saint Louis vs. No. 5 Dayton) and 7:30 pm (No. 3 George Washington vs. No. 6 Rhode Island). The semifinals will be played Saturday at 5 and 7:30 pm, with No. 1 Duquesne facing the SLU-UD winner at 5:00 pm and No. 2 VCU playing the GW-Rhody winner at 7:30 pm.
