Newport News, Va. – Saint Louis’ Braxton Martinez has been named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week, while George Washington’s Jacob Williams was tabbed Pitcher of the Week and Fordham ‘s Greg Weissert earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Martinez powered the Billiken offense in the Wake Forest Tournament. Over the four games, he was 9-16 (.563 average) with three doubles. Martinez was a complete hitter, maintaining a team-best .750 slugging percentage and a team-leading .611 on-base percentage for a 1.361 OPS. In the first game against Saint Peter’s, he was 4-4 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI. Martinez went 3-5 with two doubles and a run scored vs. Stony Brook.
Williams helped GW earn a 1-0 win over Lafayette on Saturday, rallying behind the right-hander, who pitched a stellar 10.0 innings of shutout baseball. Williams was on point for the Colonials, scattering six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. He threw 127 total pitches with 88 going for strikes.
Weissert made a pair of relief appearances this weekend against Delaware and posted his first two collegiate saves in the final two games of the series. He pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout in game two to earn his first career save on Saturday, securing a 5-3 win for the Rams. On Sunday, with two outs and the bases loaded in a 7-5 game, he got the inning-ending ground out and pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the weekend, helping Fordham even its record at 3-3 on the year. So far this season, Weissert has yet to allow a run in four relief appearances, yielding only one hit in 4.1 innings.
