Newport News, Va. – Saint Joseph’s Collin Forgey has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while his teammate Jordan Carter earned Pitcher of the Week honors. UMass’ Mike Geannelis was tabbed as Rookie of the Week.
Forgey hit .400 for the week with 10 RBI and notched a pair of game-winning hits as the Hawks went 4-0, including a sweep of A-10 rival Fordham. On Tuesday, his 13th-inning home run propelled Saint Joseph's into the finals of the Liberty Bell Classic, to be played at Citizens Bank Park, with a 4-2 win at Penn to end the Quakers' 11-game winning streak. Then on Sunday, with the Hawks trailing 3-2 in the ninth to the Rams, Forgey's two-out, two-run double carried SJU to a 4-3 win and a sweep of the weekend series that left the Hawks tied for first place in the Atlantic 10.
Carter tied a program record with 15 strikeouts on Saturday as he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 17-1 rout of Fordham. The senior struck out the first four batters of the game and six of the first seven. Through the first seven innings of the game, only eight Fordham hitters managed to put the ball in play; Carter retired them all via ground ball outs.
Geannelis pitched three hitless shutout innings in UMass’ 3-2 series-clinching win over Saint Louis with no walks and no strikeouts to earn his first collegiate victory. Geannelis was UMass’ DH for two games on the weekend and went 3-for-9 at the plate with a run scored, including one multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4 in the Minutemen’s 7-1 win over the Billikens.
