NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Saint Joseph’s senior first baseman Mike Muha was named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Steven Moyers of Rhode Island was named Pitcher of the Week, while Tyler Zombro was named Rookie of the Week.
Muha hit a torrid .520 this week, including a 10-for-16 performance in a three-game sweep at A-10 foe La Salle. He posted slugging percentage of .720 for the week and an OPS of 1.258, leading the Hawks with seven runs scored and eight runs batted in over the last five games. His RBI single on Wednesday gave the Hawks a lead they would not relinquish in a 7-6 win at Villanova. On Friday, Muha’s second-inning two-run home run put the Hawks on top en route to a 6-4 win at La Salle in the series opener. Muha then recorded a pair of four hit games on Saturday and Sunday against the Explorers
Moyers put together a strong performance against VCU, earning his first win of the season in the form of a complete game shutout - the first of his career. Through nine complete frames, he allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out five. Moyers never faced more than four batters in an inning. After giving up a leadoff double in the second, he did not allow another hit until the top of the ninth.
In a key win over Saint Louis, Zombro entered the game in the top of the ninth inning in relief of starting pitcher Anthony Montefusco with the score tied 1-1. The Staunton, Va. native would go on to pitch the next five innings in the 13-inning game, holding SLU scoreless and allowing only four hits with one strikeout as he earned his fourth win of the season in the 2-1 extra-inning victory.
