Dacey, along with seven other players from across the country will participate in the Home Run Derby that will air live on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. ET. “We couldn’t be more excited for Matt to participate in the College Home Run Derby,” Richmond head coachsaid. “Matt had a great season for us and has continued that this summer. It’s not only great for Matt to be participating, but also for the Spider Baseball program”
The College Home Run Derby includes three rounds of play: Round 1 featuring all contestants, Round 2 featuring the hitters with the top four scores after Round 1, and Round 3 featuring the top two sluggers after Round 2.
In each round, contestants will attempt to hit as many home runs as they can before logging 10 outs, or hits that do not result in a home run. Balls reaching the warning track will not count as an out, giving players another opportunity at bat.
Additionally, following the tenth and final out of each at bat, contestants will have an opportunity to hit a home run with the ‘Bonus Ball.’ If successful, the special ball will tack two additional home runs onto the contestant’s total score.
“When Coach Woodson called me and told me that I'd been selected I was speechless,” Dacey remarked. “Representing Richmond baseball on a national scale is going to be a huge honor and I'm incredibly humbled to be recognized as a participant in the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby. I'm beyond excited for this opportunity and I can't wait to compete in Omaha.”
After transferring from the University of Michigan, Dacey made an immediate impact in the middle of Richmond’s order. The Wyckoff, N.J. native led the Atlantic 10 in home runs with 12 – five more than any other player. Dacey also led the Spiders and ranked third in the league with 46 RBI.
