NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--The brackets of several men’s basketball in-season tournaments involving Atlantic 10 teams were announced this week, with key first-round matchups for Atlantic 10 programs.
Dayton will play in the EA Sports Maui Invitational, George Mason in the Hawaii Airlines Diamond Head Classic, and George Washington will play in the 2013 Wooden Legacy. Massachusetts will participate in the Charleston Classic, Richmond plays in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off, Saint Joseph’s will compete in the Old Spice Classic and VCU will be featured in the Puerto Rico Tip-off Classic. Information on each tournament, including first round matchups is listed below.
DAYTON –Maui Invitational
Dayton will take on Gonzaga in the first round of the EA SPORTS™ Maui Invitational on Monday, November 25 on ESPN2.
The Dayton-Gonzaga matchup pits two former Maui champions against each other. Dayton won the EA Sports Maui Invitational in 2003, while Gonzaga took the title in 2009. Syracuse (champs in 1990 and 1998) is the only other former winner in the field. The other three first-round matchups are Cal vs. Arkansas, Syracuse vs. Minnesota, and Baylor vs. Chaminade. The tournament is played Nov. 25-27.
Gonzaga was 32-3 in 2012-13 and was ranked #1 in the final AP rankings before being upset in the second round of the NCAA tournament by Wichita State.
ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will offer live, high-definition television coverage of all 12 Championship Round games. Games will also be broadcast live on the WatchESPN mobile app and WatchESPN.com.
GEORGE MASON- Diamond Head Classic
George Mason will open the 2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic against Iowa State University on Sunday, December 22, in a game that will be played at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time (12:30 p.m. Hawaiian time), and will be televised on ESPNU.
The Patriots and Cyclones are meeting for the first time, with the winner advancing to face the winner of Oregon State-Akron on Monday, December 23 at 4:30 p.m. ET. The two non-winning teams will meet on the same day at 2:30 p.m. ET, with both contests broadcast live on ESPNU.
With a win on Monday, the Patriots would earn a spot in the championship game, where they will play on ESPN2 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Christmas Day.
Mason will square off against Iowa State, a team which went 23-12 a season ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Third Round where the Cyclones fell to Ohio State. ISU finished the Big XII season 11-7 and fell to eventual champion Kansas in the conference semifinals. The Cyclones sport four seniors while losing their top two scorers from 2012-13. The top returning offensive player for the Cyclones is sophomore forward Georges Niang, who chipped in 12.1 points per game along with 4.6 rebounds per contest.
GEORGE WASHINGTON – Wooden Legacy
George Washington men's basketball will play the opening game of the 2013 Wooden Legacy against Miami (Fla.) at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif., on Thursday, Nov. 28.
The eight-team bracket was announced on Wednesday, and the Colonials will face the Hurricanes and their third-year head coach Jim Larranaga at 2:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Ten of the event's 12 games will air on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, while ESPN3 will have the two additional games.
The winner of GW/Miami will advance to Semifinal #1 to play either Marquette or Cal State Fullerton at Titan Gym on Friday, Nov. 29 at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN or ESPN2. The Consolation #1 contest will follow at 6:00 p.m. ET on ESPN3. The lower half of the bracket is comprised of first round match-ups between College Charleston and San Diego State (8:30 p.m. ET/ESPNU), and Creighton and Arizona State (11:00 p.m. ET/ESPN2).
Final round games will be played on Sunday, Dec. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET with the Championship Game set to air on ESPN2 at 9:30 p.m. ET.
MASSACHUSETTS – Charleston Classic
The 2013 Charleston Classic officially announced the bracket and television schedule Wednesday. The event will take place at the TD Arena in Charleston, S.C., Nov. 21-24.
Massachusetts will open play against Nebraska on Thursday, Nov. 21. The teams will meet for the first time when they open the tournament at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The game will be aired on ESPN3. The winner will face the winner of the UAB-New Mexico game on Friday at 2:30 p.m, while the losers will play at Noon.
The remaining first round matchups include Georgia and future Atlantic 10 member Davidson at 5 p.m., and Temple against Clemson at 7:30 p.m.
RICHMOND – Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off
Richmond will open the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off with North Carolina, facing the Tar Heels at noon on Nov. 23 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The game will air on ESPN3.
Defending national champion Louisville and Fairfield square off in the other semifinal at 2:00 pm that same afternoon. The winning teams will play in the championship game, which will air on ESPN at 1:00 pm on Nov. 24. The two losing teams play in the consolation game on ESPN3, immediately following the championship.
SAINT JOSEPH’S – Old Spice Classic
Saint Joseph's men's basketball will meet LSU on Thanksgiving night to open play in the 2013 Old Spice Classic at HP Field House at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla. The game will be televised on ESPN2 at 8:30 p.m., with the eight-team tournament running Thursday, Friday and Sunday, November 28, 29 and December 1.
The Hawks will play either Memphis or Siena in the next round on Friday, November 29. Rounding out the tournament field are Butler, Purdue, Oklahoma State and Washington State.
ESPN2 will carry six of the tournament games, including all four first-round games. ESPNU will air four and ESPN and ESPN3 will each have one game. The Championship Game will air Sunday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
VCU – Puerto Rico Tip-Off
The last time VCU and Florida State matched up Bradford Burgess took an inbounds pass from Joey Rodriguez and laid it in to send the Rams to the Elite Eight in 2011. This time around, the two programs will face off in the first round of the 2013 Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
VCU’s second round opponent will be either Long Beach State or Michigan. On the other side of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off bracket is Georgetown, Charlotte, Kansas State and Northeastern.
VCU and Florida State will be the final game of the first day (Thursday, November 21), scheduled for 9:30 p.m. EST and will be shown on ESPNU. The Rams will play at either 6 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. on day two (Friday, November 22).
