NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham senior Erin Rooney has been named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Saint Louis freshman Erin Nelson was tabbed as the A-10 Rookie of the Week for games played Nov. 8 – Nov. 10.
Rooney helped Fordham split its first two games this weekend, averaging 19.5 points and eight rebounds. The Christchurch, New Zealand, native registered her first double-double of the year with 19 points and ten boards in Fordham’s win over the Dons before scoring a team-high 20 points and grabbing six boards against No. 13 Penn State on Sunday. Rooney also averaged four assists a game in the team’s first two contests.
Nelson led Saint Louis in scoring in both of its games this week as SLU went 1-1. The Ballwin, Mo. native scored 25 points against Missouri and 19 in a win over Valparaiso. Nelson also tied for game-high rebounding honors with seven boards against Valpo. Against Missouri, she scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, in a 20-6 run that narrowed Missouri’s 15-point lead to one point late in the second half.
A-10 Weekly Honor Roll
Andrea Hoover was named to the Iowa Challenge All-Tournament Team. Hoover took a team-high 16 free throws, converting 13. She was one of three Dayton Flyers who averaged 17 ppg in the two games this weekend … Duquesne’s Wumi Agunbiade was named to All-Tournament team at Maggie Dixon Classic had team-high 20 pts and 9 rebs vs. Cal Poly … Talisha Watts got her first career double-double as the George Mason women’s basketball team dropped its regular season opener 75-66 to East Carolina … Megan Nipe led all scorers with 20 points in George Washington’s 101-73 win over Jackson State, matching her career high. She made 7-of-17 shots, including two from three-point range, and was 4-for-5 from the foul line while adding three assists, three rebounds, a steal and a block … Khristin Lee of La Salle had 11 points and eight rebounds in a loss to Temple … Brianna Thomas had a team-high 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with two rebounds and one blocked shot against for Rhode Island against Delaware … Kristina King of Richmond played a vital role in the first two games of the season as she led the Spiders with double figures in both contests. She tallied a game-high 21 points with nine rebounds and a career-high five steals against Georgetown. Against Miami, King led the Spiders with 11 points, three assists and matched her career-high five steals … St. Bonaventure’s Katie Healy led the Bonnies to their first win of the season on Sunday, 77-72 over Colgate with 21 points (career high) and nine rebounds … Erin Shields of Saint Joseph’s had 15 pts. against Mount St Mary's on Friday and 23 at #15 LSU Sunday including seven three-pointers … VCU’s Monnazjea Finney-Smith came off the bench and paced four Rams in double-figure scoring with a team-high 18 points in her collegiate debut, in a 85-66 rout of Youngstown State Sunday afternoon.
