The VCU Rams, who are off to their best start in six years, improve to 8-1 for the first time since 2007-08, and just the third time in the program’s 40-year existence.  VCU pushed its unbeaten streak to seven games, its longest since reeling off eight straight in 2009-10.  The school record is nine, which occurred in 1994-95.

The A-10 has three teams ranked in the top-58 of the first RPI report.  Saint Joseph’s is currently fourth , while Fordham is 44 and Duquesne is 58.  The A-10 as a whole is ranked eighth among conferences.

Rhode Island won its third straight game Saturday against Vermont. It was the first 3-game winning streak since early in the 2007-08 season. The Rams shot a season-high 45 free throws against Vermont. The previous high this year was 24. In the first half against Vermont, Rhode Island held the Catamounts to 19.4 percent from the floor, the lowest by an opponent in a half this season. The 19 points by Vermont were the fewest in a half by an opponent this season.

GW defeated Loyola (56-50) and Morgan State (75-60) last week to improve to 6-4, its best record through 10 games since 2008-09.

Dayton went 1-0 this week with an 87-76 win over Washington State, who was coming off a road win over No. 10 Nebraska. UD continues its home-court winning streak to 16 consecutive, tied for seventh best in the NCAA with Notre Dame.

Fordham took home its seventh victory in a row on Sunday afternoon, using a ferocious defensive effort to down Illinois State, 57-32.  Fordham led 32-6 at the half, holding the Redbirds scoreless for 17 minutes and 22 seconds.  The team’s 32 points surrendered were the lowest against a Division I opponent since 1995.
