Hoover, Nelson, Robinson Snag A-10 Weekly Awards
Newport News, Va. – Dayton’s Andrea Hoover has been named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Saint Louis’ Erin Nelson and VCU’s Keira Robinson shared Rookie of the Week honors for games played Feb. 17 – Feb. 23.
Hoover led the No. 22-ranked Flyers in scoring this week with 20.7 ppg. The Flyers went 3-0 this week, with road wins at Saint Louis (90-74) on Feb. 17 and at La Salle (84-69) on Feb. 19, and a home win vs. Saint Joseph's (82-56) on Feb. 23. Hoover started the week with a career-high 29 points vs. Saint Louis. With UD down after the first half, Hoover scored 20 of her career-high 29 points in the second half, including a four-point play with 4:24 to play in the second half that gave UD a 78-61 lead. Hoover also had a game-high seven assists and six rebounds. Hoover followed that with 19 points against La Salle. With the Explorers up by 12 points midway through the first half, Hoover took control scoring 12 of UD's next 15 points to help even the score. Her three-point play was the final score of the first half and gave the Flyers a 41-34 lead. In a game in which five Flyers scored in double figures, Hoover had 14 points to help UD in a 82-56 win over Saint Joseph's Sunday.
Nelson averaged a team-high 19.0 points last week and was the Billikens’ leading scorer in all three games. She poured in 21 points against A-10 leader Dayton Feb. 17, scored 16 against Rhode Island Feb. 19 and tossed in a game-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and three assists at VCU Feb. 22. Nelson tied a career high by sinking four 3-pointers against Rhode Island, and she buried four more treys at VCU. Nelson shot 41 percent (9-of-22) from 3-point range and 91 percent (10-of-11) from the foul line. She averaged 4.3 rebounds, and seven of her 13 rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Robinson averaged 13.5 points, 8.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 steals in a pair of VCU victories during the week. After dishing out a total of 16 assists, Robinson moved into third place on VCU’s single-season assists list. Robinson scored 13 points and handed out eight assists in a win over St. Bonaventure before scoring 14 points and recording eight helpers in a win over Saint Louis.
A-10 Honor Roll
Dayton’s Celeste Edwards averaged 10.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 3.3 apg during the week with three starts this week … Duquesne’s Wumi Agunbiade recorded her 25th career double-double (18p, 12r) in last second loss to SJU and became the Dukes’ second all-time leading scorer in her game-high 22 point effort in 60-51 win over Fordham … Emily Tapio of Fordham registered her third straight double-double against Duquesne . The Brewster, N.Y., native scored a career-high 19 points on 8-13 shooting and grabbed ten boards. Her teammate Hannah Missry connected on three shots from downtown and finishing with 11 points in her team’s loss to the Dukes … George Washington’s Jonquel Jones led the Colonials to a 72-58 win over Richmond with her eighth double-double of the season, recording a career-high 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting to go with 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks … UMass sophomore guard Jasmine Harris scored 20 points to lead UMass women’s basketball to a 69-56 victory over Rhode Island to give the Minutewomen their first A-10 victory of the season … Rhode Island Samantha Tabakman averaged 15 points and seven rebounds in a pair of games this week for the Rams. She has reached double figures in scoring in four straight games, averaging 14.2 points over the stretch … Ciara Andrews of Saint Joseph’s averaged 18 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in leading SJU to a 1-1 record. On Wednesday, Andrews had a career-high 21 points and added a career-best six rebounds in a win over Duquesne. She followed with a team-best 15 points at Dayton.
