SJU POSTGAME | DAYTON POSTGAME

Philadelphia, PA – Fourth-seeded Saint Joseph’s advanced to finals of the 2013 Buick Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship with a 61-54 victory over top-seeded and No. 11/11 Dayton on Sunday afternoon. 

Saint Joseph’s will await the winner of the second semifinal between Fordham and Temple.   The A-10 Championships will be on March 16 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. and televised live on ESPNU.

Chatilla Van Grinsven led all scorers with 19 points and had 10 rebounds for the Hawks who improve to 22-8 on the season.   Erin Shields had 12 points, while Ilze Gotfrida had 10 points off the bench. for SJU.  Saint Joseph’s won the rebounding battle 42-32 behind Chatilla, a game-high 13 boards from Ashley Prim and eight from Gotfrida.

Dayton drops to 27-2 on the year and has its 15 game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Hawks.  Andrea Hoover and Kelley Austria each had 11 points for the Flyers, while Ally Mallot and Sam MacKay each had nine points for UD.

The Hawks got off to a hot start, taking a 9-0 lead on a three-pointer by Shields just 1:49 into the game.

Saint  Joseph’s  would continue to build on its lead throughout the half, and took a 15 point advantage when a Ashley Prim basket made it 33-18 with 2:21 to play. 

Dayton scored six of the final eight points of the half, including a Hoover three-pointer at the buzzer to send the teams to the intermission with SJU leading 35-24.

Saint Joseph’s was able to push its lead to 12 at the outset of the second half, but Dayton fought back and was able to cut its deficit to three when Kelly Austria jumper made it 52-49 with 4:18 to go in the game.

Hoover would make the score 52-51 with under three minutes on the clock, but the Hawks scored the next six points to seal the game and move on to the finals.
