WASHINGTON - Freshman Caira Washington posted her second double-double in three games to lead GW to a 56-50 victory over Loyola (Md.) on Monday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Washington posted career highs of 15 points, 13 rebounds and three steals. She made 7-of-11 attempts from the floor and added three blocks. Graduate student Danni Jackson scored 13 points and dished out a season-high eight assists to give her 395 in her career. Grad student Megan Nipe was the third Colonial in double figures with 11 points to go with three steals, and freshman Hannah Schaible did a little bit of everything, tallying seven points, a career-high 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists.
GW (5-4) jumped out to a 12-2 lead after five minutes of play, but 10 straight points by Loyola's Nai Brown tied the game two minutes later. A three-pointer by Jackson was answered by a Nicole Krusen triple, but a steal and bucket by Washington put the Colonials on top for good at the 11:08 mark. GW led, 31-23, at the break.
Loyola (2-7) scored the first four points of the second half before Washington took over, scoring seven straight to give GW its largest lead of the night, 38-27, at 16:27. They Greyhounds kept chipping away, pulling within six three times in the next eight minutes, but the Colonials always had an answer, rebuilding a double-digit lead on a layup by sophomore Dalacy Anderson with 5:07 left.
Loyola, however, used a 9-2 run over the next 4:40 to pull within three points, 53-50, with 27 seconds remaining, but the Colonials made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the 56-50 victory.
GW scored 30 points off 24 Loyola turnovers and outrebounded the Greyhounds, 43-33.
Brown led Loyola with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. She scored 15 points in the first half. Kara Marshall added 10 points and three steals. Loyola's 50 points and 18 field goals in the game were season lows for a GW opponent.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday when they host Morgan State at 2 p.m., at the Charles E. Smith Center.
