Duquesne Tops Rhode Island 61-53 in A-10 First Round
RICHMOND, Va. – Sixth-seeded Duquesne advanced to the Quarterfinals of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship with a 61-53 victory over 11th seeded Rhode Island Thursday evening at the Richmond Coliseum.
The Dukes improve to 19-11 overall and advance to Friday Quarterfinal action against third-seeded Fordham at 7:30 p.m. Rhode Island ends its season with a 7-23 mark.
April Robinson led three Dukes in double digits with 13 points, while Raegan Moore and Olivia Bresnahan each had 12 in the win. Moore also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to help Duquesne to a slim 34-33 edge on the glass.
Rhode Island got 11 points from Sydney Lewis, while Tati Johnson came off the bench to score 10 points for the Rams.
Rhode Island took a 27-21 lead following a Tayra Melendez bucket with 3:51 to play in the first-half.
Duquesne would rally by closing out the half on a 10-0 run to take a 31-27 lead at the break.
Rhode Island rallied to start the second-half, cutting the Dukes lead to three on a Samantha Tabakman jumper with just under 15 minutes to play in the game.
A Jose-Ann Johnson put back on the other end sparked a 9-2 run that was capped by an Orsi Szecsi bucket to give Duquesne a 10 point edge with 12 minutes to play.
Rhode Island would battle back again cutting the lead to three with 3:16 left. That would be as close as the Rams would get as Duquesne got a big three pointer from Oditte Odisho on its ensuing possession to seal the win.
