George Washington Tops Saint Joseph's in OT Thriller
Richmond, Va. – Down two with 1:44 left in the second half, Danni Jackson hit two free-throws in the final minute to force overtime en route to defeating St. Joseph’s, 82-79, in the A10 Women’s Basketball quarterfinal round at the Richmond Coliseum.
George Washington advances to the semifinal round and face top-seeded Dayton tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. live on CBS Sports Network.
Sarah Fairbanks gave St. Joseph’s (22-9) the 63-61 lead with a layup at the 1:44 mark. On George Washington’s ensuing possession, Jackson was fouled with 50 seconds left on the clock, which led to the free-throws that forced the overtime period.
GW started the overtime period with a quick four points from Jonquel Jones to give GW the 67-65 lead with 3:41 left to play. Natasha Cloud knotted the score at 67-67 with a layup at the 3:20 mark.
Jones was fouled on the Colonials’ next possession and drained two shots from the charity stripe to put GW up 69-67 with 2:58 remaining. George Washington never let the lead slip as it saw its advantage grow to as many as six points down the stretch.
For the game, St. Joseph’s shot 48.5 percent from the floor (33-68), while GW made 27-of-66 shots for a 40.9 shooting percentage. The Colonials also held a 44-34 edge on the glass, including 17 offensive rebounds.
Jones led all scorers with 30 points, while also adding a game-high 16 rebounds. Jackson and Megan Nipe added 17 points apiece. Jackson also dished out a team-high seven assists. Hannah Schaible added 10 points and six boards.
Fairbanks led the Hawks with 19 points and six rebounds, while Erin Shields added 17 points. Cloud chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Ashley Robinson and Ciara Andrews each recorded 13 points in the loss.
