George Washington Advances to Third Round of the WNIT

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Graduate student Danni Jackson scored 19 points and sophomore Jonquel Jones posted a double-double as the George Washington women's basketball team defeated Villanova, 76-66, in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Sunday afternoon at The Pavilion.

GW (23-10) advances to face South Florida in the third round of the WNIT on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Tampa after the Bulls (21-12) defeated Stetson, 75-56, in second-round action on Sunday afternoon.

Jackson scored a game-best 19 points to become the 13th Colonial ever with 1,400 in her career, passing Kimberly Beck ('08) and Karin Vadelund ('90) to move into 12th place all-time at GW with 1,404 points. With six assists in the game, she also passed Colleen McCrea for the second-highest single-season total in program history with 199. Beck holds the record with 205.

Jones notched her 12th double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and grad student Megan Nipe and junior Chakecia Miller each scored 13 points. Miller added six assists and six rebounds and Nipe was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line, draining six in a row in the final 33 seconds.

GW jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, but Villanova (23-9) rallied to tie it at the 15:17 mark. The next five minutes included three more ties and the Wildcats led 17-16 with 11:18 to go in the first half, but a three-pointer by Nipe gave the Colonials the lead for good, igniting a 9-0 run. GW led 36-31 at the break behind 50 percent shooting in the half. 

Villanova pulled within four early in the second half, but the Colonials responded with a 12-4 spurt to take a game-high 58-46 lead. Freshman Hannah Schaible scored all seven of her points during the surge, including a three-pointer at the 11:34 mark that gave GW its first double-digit lead.

The Wildcats, who made just three field goals in the first 12 minutes of the half, got back within five with 1:03 remaining, but the Colonials made 9-of-10 free throws in the final 51 seconds, the final six by Nipe to seal the 76-66 victory.

GW dominated the boards, outrebounding Villanova, 53-31, including 24-10 on the offensive glass. Holding a five-rebound edge at halftime, 18-13, the Colonials pulled down 35 boards in the second half to the Wildcats' 18.

Katherine Coyer led Villanova with 15 points, while Devon Kane had 13 points and six assists.
