April 2, 2012

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Atlantic 10 has named Massachusetts sophomore attacker Katie Ferris as its lacrosse player of the week, senior goalkeeper Megan Corliss of La Salle as its defensive player of the week and La Salle freshman midfielder Caitlyn Brostrand as its Rookie of the Week. It’s the second straight week Ferris and Corliss won their respective awards, which were announced, Monday for matches played during the week of March 26 - April 1, 2012.

Ferris led UMass to a 2-0 start to the Atlantic 10 season with a 15-14 overtime win at Richmond and a 23-10 win at George Washington. A Carthage, N.Y., native, she tallied 13 points for the week on nine goals and four assists. Against Richmond, she scored five goals and had two assists along with one draw control. She posted four goals in the win at George Washington, along with two assists, two groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Corliss broke the all-time saves record at La Salle on Friday night against Duquesne, tallying 15 stops in a 12-11 overtime win. She posted a 10.00 goals against average on the week and a .533 save percentage. A Blue bell, Pa., native, she had 24 total saves on the week and helped La Salle tie the all-time program record for wins in a season (nine). It’s also the Explorers’ best start after 11 games (9-2).

Brostrand had eight goals in two games, including an overtime game-winning goal against Duquesne that started a 2-0 weekend for La Salle. A Runnemede, N.J., native, she added a go-ahead goal near the end of regulation and then the game-winning goal in overtime as the Explorers defeated Duquesne on Friday night. Brostrand followed that with four goals in a 14-10 win over St. Bonaventure Sunday. She also added two ground balls and two draw controls to total three in each category for the week.
