NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named sophomore Caitlyn Brostrand of La Salle and George Washington senior Jess Hicks the Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively. GW freshman Olivia Boudreau was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Tuesday for games played from Feb. 25 – March 3.
Brostrand was the Explorers’ leading scorer on the week, leading the team to a 2-0 record. She scored game-winning goals in both contest, including a one-point win over Delaware (13-12). A midfielder from Runnemede, N.J., she finished the week with nine goals and an assist, which came in a 21-5 win over Long Island for a total of 10 points. She recorded a ground ball in each game, and five total draw controls. Four of those came in the LIU win, along with a pair of caused turnovers.
Hicks helped GW to an undefeated week at home with wins over George Mason (10-6) and Bucknell (11-9). Hicks totaled 15 saves in 45 shots faced in 120 minutes of work while allowing 15 goals. She also picked up three ground balls. Against GMU Hicks made six saves and picked up one ground ball. The Brandywine, Md., native she set aside nine shots against Bucknell, including a notable stop in a one-on-one situation with a Bison attacker, and picked up two ground balls.
Boudreau also played a role in GW’s 2-0 week on the strength of six goals on 10 shots, one assist, four ground balls and three draw controls, in addition to converting 2-2 on free position goals. In the Colonials’ 10-6 win over George Mason, Boudreau tallied four goals on six shots, picked up four ground balls, won one draw control and caused a turnover. In GW’s 11-9 win over Bucknell on Sunday, the midfielder from North Andover, Mass., chipped in two goals on four shots taken, dished out an assist and won two draw controls.
