Ferris, Quinn, Kidder Earn Lacrosse Weekly Awards
Feb. 21, 2012
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--The Atlantic 10 has named Massachusetts sophomore attacker Katie Ferris as its lacrosse offensive player of the week, senior midfielder Hilary Quinn of George Washington as its defensive player of the week and Duquesne freshman midfielder Amanda Kidder as its Rookie of the Week. The league announced the three awards, the first of the season, Tuesday for matches played during the week of Feb. 13-19.
Ferris scored a career-high seven goals adding three assists for a career-best 10 points in an 18-8 win over Holy Cross to open the 2012 season for UMass. Her seven goals and 10 points are the most for a single player in the country for a game in the opening two weeks of play. Only 10 players accomplished double-figure scoring in all of the 2011 season. In just 19 career games, the Carthage, N.Y., native now has 82 points on 63 goals and 19 assists.
Quinn led the Colonials with five ground balls and added eight draw controls and two caused turnovers in a pair of games last week. The Manhasset, N.Y., native recorded a team-high four ground balls to go along with six draw controls and two caused turnovers in GW's season-opening 22-5 rout of Howard, then picked up one ground ball and won two draw controls at Drexel.
Kidder scored three goals in an 11-minute span of the first half to register her first career hat trick in the Dukes 18-4 win over Bucknell. Her first goal came off an assist from senior Elise Caldwell while the next two came on free position shots. Her third goal was Duquesne's fifth overall, providing the Fairport, N.Y., native with her first career game-winner as well.
