NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Richmond’s Caitlin Fifield its Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, Maura Malone of La Salle and Kelsey McGovern of UMass Co Defensive Players of the Week, while Temple’s Rachel Schwaab was tabbed as the league’s Rookie of the Week.
Fifield recorded seven goals on the week for the Spiders including five in a 17-10 win over No. 19 Towson. Fifield also had a pair of goals against JMU, dished out a pair of assists on the week and grabbed six draw controls as well.
Malone recorded her seventh win of season in the cage, anchoring the La Salle defense while the squad was playing two-players-down in the final two minutes of an OT win against Central Connecticut. Malone intercepted an 8m free position shot to secure the win in OT and help the squad to program best 7-1 record through eight games.
McGovern anchored a UMass defensive unit which allowed just 13 goals in two wins last week against Vermont (16-5) and at Sacred Heart (21-8). McGovern finished the week with 14 draw controls, six groundballs and four caused turnovers. Against Vermont, she had 8 draw controls, five groundballs and two caused turnovers. Against Sacred Heart, she had six draw controls, one groundball and two caused turnovers.
Schwaab recorded the second hat trick of her young career with three goals in a 12-7 win at USC, while also tallying three assists for six total points. Schwaab scored another goal and added an assist in a 19-12 loss at San Diego State.
