NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Atlantic 10 has named Richmond senior midfielder Mary Flowers as its lacrosse player of the week, senior goalkeeper Liz Walker of Duquesne as its defensive player of the week and Richmond freshman midfielder Emily Doyle as its Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday for matches played during the week of April 2 -April 8, 2012.
Flowers scored 10 goals and registered five assists in a 2-0 week for the Spiders. The Virginia Beach, Va., native tallied the 15 points by scoring six goals and two assists versus La Salle in a 17-15 win and four goals and three assists in a 20-16 victory over Temple. She scored the 10 goals off of 11 shots. She also had 11 ground balls for the week, seven draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Walker had a personal best 18 saves to help the Dukes send No. 10 UMass to overtime before falling, 10-8. The Sewickley, Pa. native, also secured an overtime win against St. Joseph’s, notching eight saves and allowing just 10 goals in 66 minutes of work. For the week, she posted a 9.09 goals against average, facing 62 shots and making 26 saves.
Doyle set a school-record for assists in a game with seven against Temple, besting a record that was set in 2004. It’s the second straight Rookie of the Week award for the Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., native. She also had three goals on the week, one versus Temple and three more assists versus La Salle for a weekly total of three goals and 10 assists for 13 points.
