UMass Making Bid for Fourth Straight A-10 Lacrosse Title
April 26, 2012
RICHMOND, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference will crown a women’s lacrosse champion when the 14th annual A-10 Lacrosse Championship is played this weekend, April 27-29, at Robins Stadium on the campus of the University of Richmond.
Both Friday semifinals will be web-streamed free of charge through Atlantic10.com. Sunday’s final will be played Sunday at 1:00 pm and will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
Top-seeded Massachusetts (16-1 Overall, 7-0 A-10) enters the event riding a 10-game winning streak and looks to capture its fourth consecutive A-10 title. The Minutewomen, led by A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, Katie Ferris, will take on fourth-seeded George Washington (10-6, 4-3 A-10) in Friday’s second semifinal. The matchup, just the second ever in the A-10 Championship between these two teams, will serve as a rematch of the 2009 semifinal in which UMass proved victorious en route to taking home its first of three consecutive league titles.
In Friday’s first semifinal, the second-seeded Duquesne Dukes (12-5, 5-2 A-10) will face the third-seed and tournament host Richmond (9-7, 5-2 A-10). Duquesne secured the tournament’s No. 2 seed this past weekend following a 12-7 victory over the Spiders in the regular season finale. Led by senior goalkeeper Liz Walker, the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, the Dukes will look to stifle the Spiders for the second consecutive game. Richmond is led by Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year Mary Flowers and will be attempting to return to the finals for the third straight year.
The 2012 A-10 Championship is a single-elimination, four-team event, in which the first-round winners advance to Sunday’s championship game. The winner of the championship will advance to the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament play-in game. Competition is set to begin Friday at 1:00 pm, with the first of two semifinals.
Ticket prices are $6 for adults or $10 for a two-day pass. Youth and children 16 and under and senior citizens will be admitted for $4 and students of Atlantic 10 institutions are $3 with valid school ID.
