NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Massachusetts sophomore Attacker Katie Ferris as its Offensive Player of the Week, senior Keeper of Massachusetts as its Defensive Player of the Week and La Salle freshman Kelly Furman as its Rookie of the Week. The league announced the three awards, Wednesday for matches played during the week of Feb. 27-Mar. 4.
Ferris posted nine goals and eight assists in a pair of victories against New Hampshire (17-5) and Sacred Heart (21-7) during the week. She shot 75% going 9-for-12 from the field, while posting one caused turnover, four draw controls and 2 groundballs. Against New Hampshire, she posted her 2nd 10-point game of the season with 5 goals and 5 assists. In Sunday’s win over Sacred Heart, she scored 4 goals while adding 3 assists.
Houlis led a defense which allowed a total of 12 goals combined in wins over New Hampshire (17-5) and Sacred Heart (21-7). The wins marked the third and fourth times in five games that UMass has allowed fewer than 10 goals in a game. Houlis led UMass with 10 groundballs and three caused turnovers to go with four draw controls and one assist. She posted a career-high 9 groundballs in the New Hampshire win along with the three caused turnovers and four draw controls.
Furman, a Boyertown, Pa. native, recorded two goals and two assists last week as La Salle picked up wins against Howard (16-10) and Delaware (9-8). She also forced a turnover and posted two groundballs.
