Newport News, Va. – Massachusetts’ Katie Ferris has been named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, while her teammate Rachel Vallarelli was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week. Richmond’s Emily Castle was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week. The student-athletes were honored for games played between Feb. 9 - Feb. 16.
Ferris led UMass with 12 points on six goals and six assists in road wins at Vanderbilt and at Connecticut. In the win over Vanderbilt, Ferris had four goals and four assists along with three groundballs and a caused turnover. Her fourth goal of the game set a new UMass career goals record (171). In the win at UConn, Ferris had two goals and two assists to go with a groundball. The two assists moved her into 2nd all-time at UMass for career assists (84). Led the A-10 in goals, assists and points to start the season.
Vallarelli picked up a pair of wins in goal for UMass at Vanderbilt and at Connecticut. The goalie posted a 5.50 goals-against-average making a total of 12 saves while facing 30 shots. Against Vanderbilt, she made five saves while allowing just six goals (five of which were free position or man-up). At UConn she allowed just five goals, while making seven saves.
Castle scored in both Richmond matches to open the season, posting two goals on three shots against Liberty on February 7, and adding one more goal on two shots in the game at No. 3 Maryland on February 16. She also collected four ground balls and won five draws in the two contests. She is one goal shy of the team lead and is tied for the team lead in ground balls.
