Newport News, Va. – Duquesne’s Haley Marafioti has been named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, while Kelsey Sheridan of Massachusetts and Allison Heath of Saint Joseph’s shared Defensive Player of the Week. La Salle’s Toni Massetti was tabbed as the A-10 Rookie of the Week.
Marafioti combined to score 12 points in a pair of weekend Duquesne victories. On March 14, she scored five goals and added three assists as DU won at St. Francis, 19-6. On March 16, Marafioti scored twice and assisted on two other goals in a 13-4 triumph at Detroit. She is now second on the team in scoring with 17 points.
Sheridan had four groundballs, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers when the Minutewomen limited Colorado's offense throughout a 17-4 victory at McGuirk Stadium on Friday. Her performance contributed to UMass holding Colorado to just 13 shots and 11 groundballs in the game while she assisted in forcing 20 turnovers and eight failed clears in 14 chances for the Buffaloes.
Heath dominated the backfield in SJU's 16-5 win over Stetson lsat Tuesday as the senior posted six ground balls and six caused turnovers - both game highs - and added a team-high four draw controls for the Crimson and Gray. In the Hawks' 18-11 loss at Old Dominion on Sunday, Heath picked up two ground balls and added one draw control to combine for eight ground balls, six caused turnovers, and five draw controls in the two-game stretch.
Massetti exploded for five goals, including the game winner, to propel the Explorers to an 11-10 come-from-behind victory over Liberty on Saturday. All five goals came in the second half when the team mounted an eight-goal scoring run to erase an 8-3 halftime deficit. She also added an assist against the Flames, as well as one goal and one assist in an earlier midweek setback at Delaware for a total of eight points on six goals and two assists for the week.
