Fordham Sweeps Weekly Cross Country Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham’s Nicholas Synan and Anisa Arsenault were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Performers of the Week, while fellow Rams’ Michael Turi and Suzy Sikorski earned Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the league office for meets ran Oct. 1-8.

Senior Synan earned Men’s Performer of the Week accolades after placing fourth out of 111 competitors in the Metropolitan Championships this past week in Riverdale, N.Y. The Iowa City, Iowa, native finished the 8k race with a career best of 26:29, just 36 seconds behind the first place finisher. Synan was the first Fordham runner to cross the finish line, leading the Rams to an overall second place team finish out of 12 schools, two of which were nationally ranked No. 17 Columbia and No. 5 Iona.

Arsenault, a junior, earned Women’s Performer of the Week honors after placing fourth out of 123 runners in the Metropolitan Championships this past week. The Attleboro, Mass., native was the first Fordham runner to cross the finish line, finishing the 5k race in a time of 18:26, 12 seconds behind No. 23 Columbia’s Mallory Anderson. The Rams took third place out of 12 teams, improving their overall times.

Turi garnered his second Men’s Rookie of the Week award this season after finishing 7th out of 111 runners in the Metropolitan Championships 8k race. The Fishkill, N.Y., native covered the course in 26:35, 42 seconds behind first place finisher No. 5 Iona Ethan Heywood, making him the first Fordham freshman and second overall freshman to cross the finish line.

Sikorski earned Women’s Rookie of the Week honors after finishing 10th in the 8k race. The Atlantic Beach, N.Y., native was the second Fordham runner to cross the finish line and the first freshmen to complete the course. Her time of 19:10 was a personal best for the 2012 season, and helped the Rams to a third place team finish.
