NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Duquesne's Jim Spisak and La Salle's Meghan McGlinchey were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Performers of the Week, while The Dukes' Bob Gasior and Rhode Island's Paige Ethier earned Men's and Women's Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office Tuesday for meets ran Sept. 23-30.
Senior Spisak earned his third Men's Performer of the Week honor this season after placing third out of 332 runners in the Gold Race at the Paul Short Invitational this past week hosted by Lehigh University. The Johnstown, Pa., native completed the 8k course in 24:00 and was the first Atlantic 10 runner to cross the finish line. The Dukes finished 12th out of 37 teams, improving their 25th place finish from 2011.
McGlinchey, a senior, earned Women's Performer of the Week accolades after winning the George Mason Invitational this past week in Leesburg, Va. The West Deptford, N.J., native completed the 5,870 meter course in 20:44, spacing herself 1:38 ahead of the runner up. The Explorers took the team title, and are now ranked sixth, as announced by the Mid-Atlantic USTFCCCA Coaches Poll Oct. 1.
Gasior earned his second Men's Rookie of the Week honor of the season after finishing the Gold Race at the Paul Short Invitational with a time of 25:42. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native was the first Atlantic 10 freshman to cross the finish line, placing 128th out of 332 competitors, and helped his team to a 12th place overall finish.
Ethier garnered her second Women's Rookie of the Week award this season after crossing the finish line 12th out of 342 runners in the Brown Race at the Paul Short Invitational this past week. The South Kingstown, R.I., native finished the 6k course in 22:19, just 29 seconds behind the first place finisher.
