NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – La Salle’s Zach Sullivan and Saint Joseph’s Elizabeth Barrett were named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Performers of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Monday. Also honored for their performances were La Salle’s Francis Ferruzzi, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week, and Fordham’s Shanna Heaney, who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. Awards were based off performances from September 9-15.
Sullivan, a senior from Pasadena, Md., led the way for the Explorers at this past weekend’s Friends Big 5 Invitational hosted by Temple University with a time of 18:52.22 (6K) en route to a third-place overall finish. As a team, the Explorers placed four runners in the top 10 on the way to a team victory over Villanova, Penn, Saint Joseph’s and Temple.
Barrett, a senior from Jenkintown, Pa., won the Friends Big 5 Invitational on Friday afternoon with a time of 14:09.58 (4K). Barrett never trailed during the race, only extending her lead throughout each of her four laps to eventually finish over 19 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The win comes two weekends after she led the Hawks with a fourth-place finish in the season-opening TCNJ Blue/Gold Classic 5k.
Ferruzzi turned in a 12th place finish with time of 19:06.12 (6K) at the Friends Big 5 Invitational. The Willow Grove, Pa., native was the fifth Explorer to cross the finish line and has now recorded consecutive top 15 finishes to begin his collegiate career.
Heaney, a freshman from Hampton Bays, N.Y., broke the course record this past weekend at the C.W. Post Invitational hosted by Long Island University, with a time of 18:09.22. Heaney’s winning performance broke the previous course record set in 2010 by Fordham’s Kerri Gallagher.
