RICHMOND, Va. - After the past two weekends, the VCU tennis programs knew they were headed dancing yet again. On Tuesday night, the Rams learned who their first dance partner would be during the NCAA Tennis Selection shows.
For the third year in a row, the men's squad will make the short trek to Charlottesville for its opening round, while the women head to Chapel Hill for the second time in the past four seasons. The men will take on Minnesota in the first round, while the women will face off with Tennessee for the second year in a row.
The men's squad (20-6) is coming off a thrilling Atlantic 10 Tournament, in which they won three straight matches to take home the title, including a wild 4-3 victory over George Washington in the championship match. Senior Max Wennakoski has been the leader all year with 32 singles victories this year and ranked in the top-30 singles players in the latest ITA rankings.
VCU will be making its 20th NCAA Tournament appearance under Coach Kostin. Last season, they toppled Columbia in the first round before falling to UVA in the second round. The Rams best finish came in 2000 when they reached the NCAA title match.
The women's squad (22-4) will be making its 14th NCAA Tournament appearance and will bring a 13-match win streak into the postseason. VCU has not lost a match since Feb. 24th and is led by sophomore Cindy Chala, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. Chala finished her first season with the Rams with a 14-4 mark at the top spot in the singles lineup.
VCU's best finish on the women's side came in 2002 when they reached the Elite Eight. It's the second straight year that the Rams will battle Tennessee in the first round, with the Lady Vols coming away with a 4-0 win in last year's first round in Charlottesville.
