VCU Sweeps First Tennis Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In the opening week of spring play, VCU’s Alejandro Argente and Cindy Chala have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Performers of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Additionally, VCU’s Jean Baptiste Mateo was named Men’s Tennis Rookie Performer of the Week.

MEN’S PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

Argente led the Rams to a 5-2 overall start, tallying six singles victories in wins against Georgetown, Campbell, Richmond, James Madison, North Carolina and N.C. State.  After dropping his first set, the senior from Castellon, Spain, rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win against No. 76 Robbie Mudge (N.C. State) at ITA National Indoors. Five out of six of Argente’s wins last week were recorded in straight sets.

WOMEN’S PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

Reigning Most Outstanding Performer, Chala, went 4-0 at No. 1 singles last week, recording wins against Georgetown, Memphis, Denver and No. 53 Eve Repic (No. 31 Tennessee). The St. Cloud, France, native dropped her first set against Repic at the UVA Winter Invitational, but forced a third set tiebreak for the win (2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7)). The junior also earned No. 1 doubles victories against Memphis and Campbell.

MEN’S ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

Mateo went 6-1 for the Rams last week, playing the majority of his matches from the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. In VCU’s match against No. 34 N.C. State, the Marseille, France, product clinched the win with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-5 (7-1) victory over No. 83 Nick Horton. The rookie also picked up straight set wins against Georgetown, Campbell, Richmond, and James Madison.
