VCU, Richmond Take Weekly Tennis Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU’s Alejandro Argente and Richmond’s Katya Salas were named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Performers of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Also honored was VCU’s Jean Baptiste Mateo, who was named Men’s Rookie Performer of the Week.

MEN’S PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Alejandro Argente, VCU
Senior | Castellon, Spain

Argente, currently ranked 66th by the ITA, picked up his eighth and ninth singles wins this spring against Middle Tennessee State and Penn State. The senior from Castellon, Spain also added two doubles victories with partner Jean Baptiste Mateo, earning his second A-10 Performer honor of the spring.  

WOMEN’S PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Katya Salas, Richmond
Sophomore | Trophy Club, Texas

Salas posted a perfect week, earning two singles and two doubles victories for the Spiders. From the No. 4 position, the sophomore defeated West Virginia’s Irinka Toidze 6-4, 6-3, and Navy’s Logan Antill, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-3. Salas and partner Anna Abadias Morales remained undefeated together in No. 2 doubles, earning doubles points against WVU, 6-4 and Navy, 8-4.

MEN’S ROOKIE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Jean Baptiste Mateo, VCU
Freshman | Marseille, France

Mateo picked up his second Rookie Performer nod of the spring, earning three wins last week for the Rams. Against MTSU, Mateo paired with Alejandro Argente for an 8-3 doubles victory, before defeating the Blue Raiders’ Sam Matheson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The pair also earned an 8-4 win against Penn State.
