NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Duquesne’s Pete Carpenter and George Washington’s Danil Zelenkov its Men’s Tennis Performer and Rookie Performer of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Xavier’s Katie Pleiman and Alex Brinker earned Women’s Tennis Performer and Rookie Performer nods, each for the second time this season. The studentathletes are recognized for matches played Mar. 18 – Mar. 24.
MEN’S TENNIS PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Pete Carpenter, Duquesne
Junior | Alburtis, Pa.
Carpenter posted a perfect record last week, earning victories in both of his singles and doubles matches against conference opponents. Carpenter improved to 7-4 in the No. 2 singles position, defeating Dayton’s Andrew Hanley (6-2, 6-1) and Saint Joseph’s Jose Sierra (6-2, 6-2) in straight sets. In doubles play, Carpenter paired with Alex Aleman for his seventh and eighth wins in the No. 1 doubles spot this season.

Zelenkov went undefeated last week with two wins, helping to lift the Colonials over Richmond and remain unbeaten in A-10 matches. The rookie picked up his seventh win in eight singles matches, a straight set win over the Spiders’ Paul Nahon (6-4, 6-4) in the No. 3 spot, before posting a No. 2 doubles victory over Nahon and Ethan Dunbar, 8-5 with partner Nikita Fomin.

Pleiman’s second Tennis Performer of the Week accolade comes after two singles and doubles wins last week, helping to improve the Musketeers’ record to 6-0 against A-10 opponents. Pleiman picked up victories over Stephanie Hollis of Saint Louis (6-1, 6-2) and Judy Li of Duquesne (1-6, 6-3, 6-4). The senior also teamed with Kally Alkire for No. 1 doubles wins against SLU and Duquesne, extending their winning streak to three.

Brinker, stepping into the No. 2 singles position, has won 14 straight singles matches, including her fourth and fifth straight set win in matches against league opponents. The freshman posted singles victories against Mia Elmore of Saint Louis (6-4, 6-1) and Duquesne’s Megan O’Sullivan (6-3, 6-3). Brinker also added a No. 3 doubles win with Brooke Dennis against SLU and was leading Duquesne 7-4, when Xavier closed out the 4-3 team victory, their fifth one-point win of the season.
