MASON, Ohio--Fifth-seeded George Washington won its second consecutive Atlantic 10 title Sunday afternoon, capturing the 2012 A-10 Men's Tennis Championship at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The Colonials defeated second-seeded Xavier 4-3.
It marks the third A-10 title for the Colonials, who also beat Xavier in the 2011 finals and won the 1979 championship. GW earned the Atlantic 10's automatic berth to the 2012 NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament, which begins the weekend of May 11-13.
Xavier captured the doubles point when Richard Canelas and Marc Pretorius won at No. 2 and Phil Diaz and Michael Moe won at No. 3.
GW took a 3-1 lead in singles, thanks to wins by Richard Blumenfeld (No. 6), Viktor Svensson (No. 5) and Alex van Gils (No. 3). XU stormed back to tie it with wins by Brandon MacDonald at No. 4 and Jimmy Roebker at No. 1
Ugur Atalay captured the match for GW with a three-set win at No. 2 doubles, winning 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
