Fordham Advances With Win Over Rhode Island

MASON, Ohio—No. 8 seed Fordham blanked ninth-seeded Rhode Island, 4-0 Thursday in the first round of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

Fordham (10-9) won the doubles point when the team of Ellie Ball and Sarah Ali won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, followed by an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles by Hanna Fritzinger and Bella Genkina.

Genkina defeated Elizaveta Sadovnikova at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2 and Julie Leong got a win at No. 5  singles over Nithila Asokaraj, 6-4, 6-3 to give Fordham two singles points for a 3-0 match lead.

Angie Dabu closed out the win for the Bronx Rams with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Kathleen Uy at No. 3 singles.

Fordham advances to face top-seeded VCU Friday at 10:00 am. Rhode Island finishes at 6-11.
