CINCINNATI, Ohio—No. 5 Massachusetts pulled the first upset of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship, defeating fourth-seeded Richmond 4-1 Friday afternoon at Queen City Racquet Club. The first two of Friday’s quarterfinals were moved indoors following rainy weather in the area.
UMass won the doubles point following wins at No. 3 doubles by Yuliana Motyl and Anna Woosley and No. 1 doubles by Sonia Bokhari and Chanel Glasper.
The Minutewomen took a 2-0 lead when Bokhari defeated Brittany Boys, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Richmond cut into the lead with a win at No. 4 singles by Melissa Kandinata, who beat Arielle Griffin, 6-3, 6-2. But UMass wins by Woosley and Aarzoo Malik at No. 5 and No. 3 singles respectively clinched the victory.
Massachusetts (13-8) will face top-seeded VCU Saturday in the semifinals at 10:00 am at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Richmond finishes at 9-13.
