NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason’s John Seals was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Performer of the Week while teammate Shelby Garnand was named the Women’s Performer of the Week. Also honored was Fordham’s Michael Petersen, who was named the Men’s Rookie of the Week and VCU’s Kayla Smith who was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from Jan 23-29.
Seals won the heptathlon and broke his own school and facility record with 5,582 points at the Patriot Games on Friday and Saturday at the George Mason Field House. His 5,582 points rank first in the Atlantic 10 and are the seventh-most this year in the country. The junior from Springfield, Va., won the 60-meter run, the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump. His high jump mark of 2.13 meters is the best in the A-10 this season. His personal-best mark of 4.61 meters in the pole vault ranks fifth in the league.
Garnand, a native from Chesapeake, Va., won the pole vault with a personal-best leap of 3.95 meters (12 feet, 11 1/2 inches) at the Patriot Games on Saturday at the George Mason Field House. The junior won the event by more than a foot and she currently has the best mark in the Atlantic 10 this season.
Petersen, a freshman from Toronto, Ontario, finished 16th in the 800-meter run with an IC4A qualifying and season-best time of 1:51.86 at the Terrier Classic on Friday.
Smith, a freshman from Ashburn, Va., finished first in the 400-meter run in 55.95 seconds at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Va. The time set a new meet and facility record and is also the third-fastest time in the Atlantic 10 in the event, and is also an ECAC qualifier.
