EUGENE, Ore. – University of Massachusetts women's track and field redshirt senior Heather MacLean capped off a stellar five-year career with the Minutewomen, racing in the 800 meter semifinals at the NCAA Championships on Thursday evening at Oregon's Hayward Field. MacLean took fifth in her heat and eighth overall, running 2 minutes, 3.61 seconds.

The performance was just shy of earning her a spot in Saturday's 800 meter final as the top two finishers from each heat and the next two fastest times advanced. Four of the eight finals qualifiers came out of MacLean's heat, Heat 2.

"Congratulations to Heather MacLean on a fabulous five-year career as a true scholar-athlete at UMass," said head coach Julie LaFreniere. "I'm so proud of all of her accomplishments, on and off the track. She has been nothing short of a treasure to coach and I'd like to thank her for five unforgettable years."

Heather's 800m Heat was the fastest and toughest to qualify from for the 8 person final on Saturday. Four of the top eight finalists came from that heat - and 6 of the 9 fastest times.

Previously an All-American in the mile indoors (2016) and in cross country (2017), the Peabody, Massachusetts native finishes her UMass career as a four-time NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary qualifier, an eight-time New England champion, 10-time Atlantic 10 champion on the track in addition to two individual A-10 titles in cross country. She earned the title of New England Cross Country Champion last fall and was a two-time Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Cross Country Performer. MacLean also garnered Atlantic 10 Indoor Most Outstanding Track Performer honors in 2016 and outdoors this spring after winning gold medals in both the 800 meter and 1,500 meter run. She finishes her UMass career holding seven individual school records and a share of four relay records, three New England records and two A-10 records.
