NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Rhode Island junior Chae Brangman was named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week Monday, while VCU freshman Mario Sequeira was selected as Defensive Player of the Week. Freshman Davis Smith of Massachusetts was awarded Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played from Sept. 25- Oct. 1.

Brangman, a junior from St. Georges, Bermuda, scored both game-winning goals for the Rams last week. Against conference opponent George Washington, Brangman notched the game-winner in the 60th minute. He leads Rhode Island with five goals this year, four of which have been game-winners. His four game-winning goals are tied for most in the conference.

Goalkeeper Sequeira earned his second collegiate shutout in as many games, and did it in grand fashion Saturday night. He shut out No. 15 nationally-ranked UNC Wilmington, making seven saves on the game. The Rams would earn the 1-0 win in double overtime. His performance against UNC Wilmington was even more impressive as the Rams played the final 55 minutes with only three defenders instead of the usual four defenders, due to a player disqualification.

Smith, a forward from Amherst, Mass., posted a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as UMass opened Atlantic 10 play with a 3-1 road win at Saint Louis on Saturday. The freshman’s career-high scoring performance came on five shots with goals scored in the 36th and 68th minutes. His first goal, which stood as the game-winner, was unassisted after he took advantage of an SLU turnover before firing off an 18-yard strike. His second goal came from a tough angle to the left of goal giving the Minutemen a late insurance goal. Smith became the first player in program history to post a pair of goals in a single game against the Billikens.
