VCU Claims Top Seed in A10 Men's Soccer Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The VCU men’s soccer team finished the year 6-1-1 in conference play to clinch the Atlantic 10 regular season title and the top seed for the 2018 A-10 Men’s Soccer Championship. The eight-team championship begins on the campuses of the top four seeds and then heads to Saint Louis’s Robert R. Hermann Stadium for the semifinals and final, Nov 9-11.

VCU finished its season with an overall record of 10-5-1, earning 19 total points in conference play. They will host No. 8 Massachusetts at 2:00 pm on Sunday. UMass (7-8-2) defeated George Washington 3-1, in a must-win game Wednesday afternoon to earn the final spot in the championship. The Minutemen finished with nine points at 3-5-0 in league play.

Davidson (5-2-1, 16 points) is seeded second with a 9-6-2 overall record. The Wildcats will host seventh-seeded Dayton in the quarterfinals at 1:00 pm on Sunday. The Flyers had 13 points to earn the seventh seed, with a 4-3-1 conference record and an 8-5-4 overall mark.

George Mason is seeded third with 15 points and a 5-3-0 A-10 record. The Patriots, who are 7-7-0 overall, will host sixth-seeded Saint Louis at 2:00 pm on Sunday. The Billikens are 3-1-4 in league play with 13 points and 6-3-7 overall.

Rhode Island is seeded fourth with 15 points at 5-3-0 in A-10 games and 12-4-0 overall. Rhody will host fifth-seeded Fordham on Sunday at 1:00 pm in the quarterfinal contest. Fordham finished with 13 points with a 4-3-1 conference record and an 8-4-4 overall mark.

George Mason Claimed the third seed over Rhode Island based on a head-to-head tiebreaker. Fordham, Saint Louis and Dayton all tied with 13 points in conference play with Fordham claiming the fifth seed and Saint Louis the sixth the fifth seed through a multi-team tiebreaker. Massachusetts, St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph’s tied with nine points in conference play. UMass claimed the final spot in the championship through a multi-team tiebreaker.

The winner of the VCU/Massachusetts and Rhode Island/Fordham games will meet in Saint Louis in Friday’s first semifinal game at 1:00 pm CT. The second semifinal match, which begins at 3:30 pm CT, will feature the winners of Davidson/Dayton and George Mason/Saint Louis games. The championship final will be played on Sunday, Nov. 11 at noon CT. The winner will earn the A-10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
