VCU Picked to Win Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer in 2019
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU, last year’s Atlantic 10 Conference regular season champion, has been selected as the men’s soccer preseason favorite for the 2019 season. The league announced the annual Preseason Poll and Preseason All-Conference team Thursday ahead of the start of the season on Friday, August 30.
The Rams were chosen first in the poll with 159 total points and eight first-place votes. VCU won the A-10 regular season the last year with a 6-1-1 record in league play and a 10-6-2 overall mark. Junior goalkeeper Mario Sequeira, junior defender Ulrik Edvardsen and senior defender Ryo Shimazaki, were all named All-Conference last year after anchoring a Rams’ defense that posted nine shutouts. Edvardsen also was named to the 2019 Preseason All-Conference Team.
Saint Louis was picked to finish second with two first-place votes and 146 total points. The Billikens finished tied for fifth last season with a 3-1-4 A-10 record and a 6-4-7 overall record. SLU will be led by the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year John Klein, sophomore forward Simon Becher and senior defender Quayyum Murana. All three were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
Defending A-10 Champion Rhode Island had 142 points and three first-place votes in the 2019 poll. The Rams finished tied for third at 5-3 last year, while posting a league-best 15-4 overall record. Preseason All-Conference selections Stavros Zarokostas, a senior midfielder, and senior defender Peder Kristiansen, both return for the Rams.
Picked fourth is Dayton, which tallied 121 points and returns Preseason All-Conference goalkeeper Federico Barrios as well as Rok Taneski, the 2017 A-10 Midfielder of the Year. Led by returning A-10 Defensive Player of the Year and Preseason All-Conference pick Joergen Oland, Fordham was picked fifth with 109 points. Davidson was sixth with 102 points and last year’s championship runner up George Mason tallied 93 points to rank seventh
Saint Joseph’s (78 points), Massachusetts (63 points) and Duquesne (57 points) are eighth ninth and tenth in the poll respectively. George Washington, St. Bonaventure and La Salle rounded out the poll.
The 2019 Atlantic 10 men’s soccer season gets underway on Friday, August 30 with 12 of the 13 teams playing season-opening matches. Conference play begins on Saturday, Sept. 21 and the semifinals and final of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship will be played at Fordham’s Jack Coffey Field in Bronx, N.Y., Nov. 15-17. The championship’s first rounds will be hosted on campus by the higher seeded teams
