RICHMOND, Va. - The sixth-seeded VCU Rams (11-5-3) defeated the seventh-seeded Saint Joseph's Hawks (11-6-3), 1-0, in the semifinals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship, held Friday at VCU's Sports Backers Stadium. With the win, the Rams advance to the title game against the top-seeded La Salle Explorers.
In a match that featured multiple scoring opportunities on both sides, it was VCU that capitalized on its best chance as Megan Dell converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Dell swiftly struck the decisive blow off a handball call on the Hawks in their own box at 70:52.
Hawks' keeper Grace Bendon made a game-high seven saves for SJU, while Audrey Sanderson recorded four stops. The Rams outshot the Hawks 15-7, while the Hawks took eight corner kicks to VCU's three.
VCU and La Salle met just two weeks ago in Philadelphia with the Explorers coming out on top, 1-0.
