NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Lock Haven junior Alysica Smith and VCU senior Chessa Kownurko were named Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Co-Players of the Week Monday. Freshman Georgie McTear of Massachusetts and Maite Sturm from VCU shared the league’s Rookie of the Week honors. Both awards were the first of the young season and cover games played on opening weekend from Aug. 25-27.

Lock Haven is off to a 2-0 start thanks to the play of Smith, who has tallied a team-high two goals and six points on opening weekend. A midfielder from Newport, Pa., she scored the game-winner in both contests, including a dramatic come-from-behind OT-victory Sunday. In the season-opener Friday – a 4-1 win over Sacred Heart – she scored the eventual game-winning goal and added two assists. On Sunday, Smith scored just 54 seconds into overtime to give LHU a thrilling 3-2 win over Central Michigan.

Kownurko, a goalkeeper, helped VCU open the season with two victories only allowing one goal. Kownurko saved a penalty stroke in the Rams' 1-0 win over Drexel Friday with 6:04 remaining in the contest and VCU leading by one goal. The North Wales, Pa., product also made five saves for the game on her way to a shutout. Against Villanova, Kownurko made 10 saves and only allowed one goal in VCU's 5-1 victory. In the game against Villanova, she also made another save on a penalty stroke to help preserve the lead.

McTear scored twice during her first weekend of collegiate field hockey - both game-winners in victories over Holy Cross and Vermont. The midfielder from Portsmouth, England, tallied her first career goal and provided the decisive margin against Holy Cross with a shot off Holy Cross' goalkeeper and into the top of the goal netting for a 4-3 lead to earn head coach Barb Weinberg her first win as UMass coach. McTear added her second game-winner in a 2-1 win over Vermont when she curved a penalty corner shot over the Catamounts' goalkeeper's pads and off the backboard.

Sturm scored the game-winning goal for VCU against Drexel on Friday in her collegiate debut. A midfielder from Waltrop, Germany, Sturm was able to collect a rebound and beat the keeper. On Sunday against Villanova, Sturm scored to make it 5-1 after firing a shot from the far side into the top left corner of the goal and past the keeper.
