McNamara Hat Tricks Earn Player of the Week Honors
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU junior Emily McNamara was named Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, while Saint Joseph’s freshman Quinn Maguire was selected as Rookie of the Week. Both awards are for games played from Oct. 16 -22.
McNamara scored back-to-back hat tricks against A-10 foes Saint Francis on Friday and La Salle on Sunday. The forward from Centreville, Va., also added an assist in each contest. On Friday, her third and final goal was the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Rams to a 5-4 win over the Red Flash. On Sunday, she scored the first two goals of the game and assisted on the third to help VCU jump out to a 3-0 lead. She also added a goal to make it 6-0 in the second half as part of the 7-0 shutout win for the Rams.
Maguire totaled eight points, scoring three goals and adding two assists as the 19th-ranked Hawks earned a pair of wins. On Friday, she assisted on the tying goal before adding one of her own later as the Hawks roared back from a 2-0 deficit to top No. 23 Massachusetts, 5-2. The forward from Media, Pa., scored twice in the first half at Northeastern on Sunday as the Hawks took the lead, then assisted on what turned out to be the game-winner with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
