Wolst, Atherley Earn Top Swimming and Diving Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington’s Tommi Wolst and Gemma Atherley were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. Also honored were St. Bonaventure’s Tjaard Krusch and Anna Campos, were named Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from meets held on Jan 8 - 14.


Wolst won all three of his swims and set a pair of pool records in helping George Washington to a sweep of local foes American and Georgetown on Saturday at American’s Reeves Aquatic Center. The junior from Leipzig, Germany, set an individual mark in the 100-yard butterfly by touching in 50.14 seconds and swam a leg on the record-breaking 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:33.37. He also took the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.75 seconds.


Atherley won all three of her swims Saturday. She picked up a Reeves Aquatic Center pool record with her win in the 200-yard freestyle by finishing in 1:52.38, nearly four seconds clear of the field. The sophomore from Jersey, Channel Islands, also claimed the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.01 and won the meet-closing 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:38.45.


Krusch, a freshman from Dorshiem, Germany, was the winner of the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley on Sunday against Binghamton. He swam the 100-yard backstroke in 50.63 and the 200-yard IM in 1:55.50. Krusch was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team that finished in 1:33.56.


Campos, a freshman from Toledo, Ohio, set personal best scores and also won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. She scored a 284.47 in the 1-meter dive and a 262.72 on the 3-meter board.
