NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – La Salle’s Fabian Bergman was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Performer of the Week, St. Bonaventure’s Devon McFadden and Olivia DiStefano of La Salle were named the Women’s Co-Performers of the Week. Danny McGowan of Fordham and Gerle Kerecsen of St. Bonaventure were named Men’s and Women’s Rookies of the Week. The awards were based off performances from meets held on Nov. 6 – 12.
Bergman had an outstanding day when La Salle hosted Delaware and Rider in a tri-meet. The senior from Stockholm, Sweeden, won the 100-yard backstroke with a final time of 50 seconds flat, over two seconds ahead of second place. Even more impressively, Bergman won the 200-yard backstroke by over five seconds with a time of 1:50.20. He also took part in the 200-yard medley relay team that combined to touch the wall first, in 1:33.01. Finally, he picked up his fourth total win of the day in the 200-yard individual medley with a final time of 1:53.91. La Salle picked up wins over both schools.
McFadden, a senior from Owego, N.Y., was the winner of three events against Canisius. Individually she was the winner of the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.52) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.93). McFadden was also part of the 200-yard medley relay team that took first place with a time of 1:48.26.
DiStefano, a junior from Philadelphia, Pa., highlighted the day for the Explorers with three first-place finishes as La Salle split a tri-meet with Delaware and Rider. DiStefano took first in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 58.06 seconds, and also in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 24.66 seconds. She was also part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed first in 3:43.69. Her day wasn’t done yet as the 200-yard medley relay team garnered a second place finish, led by DiStefano, in a final time of 1:49.13.
McGowan won the 800 short course meter freestyle event at Fairfield in a time of 8:43.19. The freshman from Chicago, Ill., anchored the 200 SCM freestyle relay that won in a time of 1:38.45.
Gerle was the winner of the 100-yard butterfly (58.88), 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.64) and 50-yard freestyle (24.11). The freshman from Budapest was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team with a time of 3:37.29 to seal the win for the Bonnies.
