Pettinichi, Nichols Named A-10 Swimming & Diving Performers of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Mason senior Michael Pettinichi and Saint Louis junior Savannah Nichols were named Atlantic 10 Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. La Salle freshman Zachary Wolbert was named Men’s Rookie of the Week while George Mason’s Megan Cummins and Davidson’s Hope Carpenter shared Women’s Rookies of the Week accolades. All four awards are for meets from Oct. 22-28.

 

Pettinichi claimed the top spot in both the 100-yard (56.92) and 200-yard Breaststroke (2:05.90) with the top times in the league for the season. The Oakton, Va., native also competed in all four relays for the Patriots to help lead the team to a first place finish in the Atlantic 10 Classic with a total of 594 points.

 

Nichols took the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.93) at the Atlantic 10 Classic and was a top-five individual point-getter for the meet. The Omaha, Neb., native also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.79 and participated in three of the team’s four relays to lead the Billikens to a third place finish overall.

 

Wolbert took home three first place finishes at the A-10 Classic to earn the most points at the meet and lead La Salle to a 2-1 weekend earning wins over St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis. The East Stroudsburg, Pa., native won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:52.67, the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:04.23 and the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.58. He was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay that took first place in the event.

 

Carpenter swept the backstroke events and led off a winning relay in Davidson’s wins over VMI and UNC Asheville on Saturday. The Greensboro, N.C., native swam the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58.73 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:08.47 and helped the 400-yard Medley relay to a winning time of 3:55.94.

 

Cummins took the top spot in two events at the A-10 Classic to help George Mason to a first-place finish overall. The Christiansburg, Va., native won the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:32.19 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.46. She also took ninth in the 200-yard freestyle and 12th in the 200-yard butterfly.
