FAIRFAX, Va. —No. 2 Massachusetts will face Fordham a fifth time this season, and this time there will be an Atlantic 10 title on the line. The Minutewomen beat No. 3 Saint Joseph's 2-0 in the consolation bracket final of the 2017 A-10 Softball Championship Saturday evening at George Mason Softball Complex.
UMass (28-23) took two of three from Fordham during the regular season, but the top-seeded Rams got their revenge earlier Saturday with a win that sent the Minutewomen to the consolation bracket. The championship final of the double elimination tournament will be played at 1:00 pm Sunday, with an NCAA berth on the line. If UMass wins the 1:00 pm game, it forces a second, deciding game.
Massachusetts ace Meg Colleran (19-13) threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout, striking out three to earn the win. Saint Joseph's starter Madison Clarke (8-8) went the distance as well, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
UMass scored both of its runs in the fifth inning when Stavinoha reached on an error that allowed both Stacevicz and Garcia, who had both reached on singles, to score.
Abadie, Zierke and Molly Kapala each had hits for the Hawks (25-28), which Stacevich, Stavinoha, Carbone and Garcia each had a hit for UMass.
